Description

1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass with the 442 Option

The 442 started out as an option for Oldsmobile’s F-85 and Cutlass models. It remained that way until 1968, when it was its own model. Then reverted back as an option in 1972.

442 (pronounced four, four, two) stood for 4 barrel carburetor, 4 speed manual transmission, and 2 exhaust pipes in 1964. In 1965 it was changed up a bit with the first 4 representing the new 400 cubic inch motor, 4 barrel carburetor, and dual exhaust. As if this were not confusing enough, many thought that the 442 moniker referred to the size of the engine. It did not help matters that some 442s came with automatic transmissions, and that 442 was often on the decal on the air cleaner where cubic inch sizes were traditionally displayed. All this made for plenty of heated exchanges at car shows then and now.

Shot this at the Mid America Raceway Park Benefit Car Show at the Redbird’s Cafe in Hazelwood, Missouri on November 6, 2010.
Cleaned this up in Photoshop, and used four layers to lighten and darken some areas.
